Perry Byars, Agriscience Instructor at Northview High School has been selected as a mentor educator for Class 10 of the Agriscience Education Leadership Program.

Mr. Byars received a letter from Erica Der, Agricultural Education Liaison for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services located in Tampa, Florida dated June 1, 2012.  The letter states, "Congratulations on being selected as a mentor educator for Class 10 of the Agriscience Education Leadership Program.  We received many exceptional applications from extremely qualified educators and your application was chosen by our selection committee for the upcoming team."

To be selected, each participant must meet specific criteria.  Listed are just a few of the requirements:  1.)  The participant must first be nominated by the District Superintendent.  2.)  Each candidate will be evaluated in terms of their professional development activities; membership and involvement with professional organizations will be considered.  3.)  The candidate's responses to application questions regarding the teaching profession as a whole and agriscience education must show logic and breadth of thought, as well as sincerity.  4.)  The candidate will be evaluated on the evidence that the nature and scope of his/her concerns range beyond self interest and/or narrow perspectives.

Mr. Byars described the Leadership Program as a "traveling seminar".  Participants travel the state of Florida from the Panhandle to South and Central Florida.  Mr. Byars said, "The purpose is to gather information from each site and bring that knowledge back to the classroom.  For example, some of the people in Miami have never seen cotton being grown, just like the people from this area have never seen a field of sugar cane."

After hearing the great news of being selected as team member of the Agriscience Leadership Program, Mr. Byars also learned that he had been selected as Teacher of the Year at Northview High School.
