On May 2nd 2013 Century Correctional Institution was awarded the Escambia County Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award for their partnerships with Bratt Elementary School, Northview High School, Oakcrest Elementary School and Ernest Ward Middle School.

Warden John Whitehurst said, “It was my honor to receive this award on behalf of all of the staff here at Century Correctional Institution who volunteer their time to assist in the education of our youth. Many of our staff volunteer at Oakcrest where the Going Coastal Program has made such an impact.  Others volunteer for Read Across America at Bratt, Ernest Ward and Byrneville, and some volunteer their time to assist in any manner needed such as classroom aides, football coaches, board member and mentors.

"Part of this award was also in recognition for all of the labor that our Work Squads do for these schools such as landscaping, clean-up and restoration projects that these schools would not be able to afford without the labor provided.

"I am very proud to serve each and every one of the staff here that make events like this possible!  I was able to share this acknowledgement with Lt. Nolen, Mrs. Marinin, Sgt. Coppenger and Major Ealum. My only regret is that each of you who are responsible for Century receiving this honor were not able to be there receiving it yourselves.”
